When I was first getting back into traditional music and started playing fiddle I read somewhere that old time tunes don't have a beginning or an end. You can start wherever you like but the tune is a circle. No development, no arc, just a cyclical, eternal present.
I also read, or maybe I made this up, that a tune is a bit like a virus. Someone else has it and they infect you. And then it churns around inside of you. Then the tune mutates and changes into something else and then you pass it on to the next person.
I made these recordings between Christmas and today, January 14th, in a nervous mania. Some of these are tunes I still remember from my dad playing them on the piano growing up. Others I’ve discovered more recently. Either way, these tunes and the idea for this record have been churning in my head the last few years, growing and changing and churning and this is a rushed attempt to move these tunes along in whatever new form they've taken. Gratitude to the endless circle for grounding me in the now.
